As a leading producer and supplier of safety-critical systems for commercial vehicles, JOST is a true reference when it comes to hi-tech solutions. We’re talking about fifth wheel couplings, landing gears, ball bearing turntables, king pins and container locks as well as components for alternating systems. The German company’s participation in the latest IAA Transportation allowed us to go deeper in their offer, made of products and solutions, and now enriched by some key acquisitions.

In fact, JOST has recently invested in Aitonomi and Trailer Dynamics, two start-ups with innovative transport solutions in the areas of autonomous driving and electrification. In addition to this, in the last few weeks JOST has been defining the acquisition of HYVA, a global supplier of hydraulic solutions for commercial vehicles whose HQs are in the Netherlands.

Nevertheless, JOST’s growth path is also made of research and development of more environmentally friendly solutions for commercial and industrial vehicles. For instance, by providing technologies supporting electric or hybrid engines as well as developing light-weight materials to improve fuel efficiency and reduce emissions.

Green solutions as part of JOST’s growth path: the e-axle

So, under the #jostgreen label, the German specialist is developing a range of innovative products. Among the most valuable examples is the trailer e-axle, a cost-efficient and modular system that can be used flexibly for battery-electric trucks as well as for vehicles with internal combustion engines. The e-axle designed by JOST, which can be used with conventional trailer tyres, is suitable for several applications, from light distribution transport and short-haul routes to long-haul operations with the requirement for a long range to heavy-duty transport for traction support during start-up maneuvers.

According to the manufacturer, over 20% CO2 emissions reduction was achieved in field testing when used in conventional diesel vehicles. In addition, regenerative braking put less strain on mechanical brakes, which reduces the need for servicing the brakes. The e-axle is only one of the JOST products that may allow for reduced environmental impact. At IAA, JOST showcased the new Modul landing gears belonging to the OPTIMA family, now weight-optimised for long-distance transport. In addition, the so-called Modul CA is an especially light aluminium landing gear with new Sfoot, boosting a weight saving of 41 kg compared to Modul B.

Lightweight axles and lubrication solutions

Thanks to its wheel head with optimised weight, wear properties and performance, JOST’s DCA WEIGHTMASTER PLUS is an extremely lightweight axle with optimized structure. It is joined by the DCA X7 brake, the lightest brake in its segment, according to JOST. Talking about axles, following the successful market launch of the CSA with the 9-tonne version, a 10-tonne axle has been added to the portfolio last year. Like the 9T, the CSA 10T can also be used in all conventional steering systems whether mechanical, hydraulic or electronic. Very low roll radius, and low space required are among the main features of the axle family.

Finally, at IAA 2024, JOST has introduced the second generation of the LubeTronic 1Point, whose lubricant properties have been improved by filling with biodegradable JOST high-performance lubricant. In particular, JOST has optimised the product design in terms of sustainability and user-friendliness. And, in terms of low environmental impact, JOST presented completely biodegradable high-performance lubricant for its fifth wheel couplings. The lubricant JHS 2020 B is suited for the manual lubrication of all fifth wheel couplings, king pins and ball bearing turntables with minimal application requirements.

Recycling, Scania to employ reused components on truck assembly lines

At first, Scania is using remanufactured gearboxes, which were subject to exactly the same rigorous steps and inline quality and function tests as gearboxes that are made from entirely new parts. The gearbox duly met all those requirements and could therefore be confirmed as being ‘as good as new’....
