General Motors to temporarily stop production of BrightDrop electric vans in Ontario, Canada
According to Reuters, GM "is temporarily laying off 1,200 workers at the plant as a result, according to Unifor, the union representing the workers". Production should temporarily cease until October, 2025. In the meantime, the production plant will be adjusted to welcome the next stage of the electric vans, Model year 2026.

General Motors’ electric commercial vehicle brand BrightDrop (here you can find some more info about the company) will temporarily stop van production due to low demand. The news was reported by several media platforms in North America. According to Reuters, GM “is temporarily laying off 1,200 workers at the plant as a result, according to Unifor, the union representing the workers”.
The company also stated that the decision is not related to the recent tariffs imposed by the U.S. administration. Production should temporarily cease until October, 2025. In the meantime, the production plant will be adjusted to welcome the next stage of the electric vans, Model year 2026.
The future of the BrightDrop project managed by GM
A statement released by GM and reported by Reuters says that the company “remains committed to the future of BrightDrop and the CAMI plant and will support employees through the transition. This adjustment is directly related to responding to market demand and re-balancing inventory. Production of BrightDrop and EV battery assembly will remain at CAMI.”
The latest data show that GM reported sales of 274 BrightDrop vans in the first quarter, up from the 256 reported in the first quarter of 2024.
